History/Overview
The Tesla Model 3 is the electric car brand’s smallest, most affordable vehicle. It’s a compact sedan that ostensibly competes against a raft of entry-level upscale cars but nonetheless has created an all-new sub-segment for sport sedans powered exclusively by electricity.
What’s New/Key Changes From Last Year
Tesla has made a few running changes to the 2021 Model 3. Those include new wheel designs, and the Standard Range, Long Range and Performance variants all get a bit more driving range. There’s also a new power trunk, and some updated materials in the cabin.
Available Trims
Tesla offers the Model 3 in a single trim but gives you the option of four powertrain options. A rear-wheel drive model comes in Standard Range form, and can be downgraded to a 151-km range priced to qualify for Canada’s EV incentive program. You can also get AWD in Long Range and Performance variants that offer the most driving range.
Standard Features
The Model 3 comes with 18-inch wheels, a black interior, an all-glass roof, a 15-inch central touchscreen, traffic sign recognition, 360-degree camera views, wireless smartphone charging, vegan leather seating, automatic climate control, heated front seats with power adjustments, heated/power-folding side mirrors, and internet media connectivity.
Key Options
The Model 3’s main option is a full self driving package that can handle lane changes, parking, and traffic light and stop sign recognition, and includes a summon feature that will drive the car to you from its parking spot.
Fuel Economy
Tesla’s energy consumption estimates for the Model 3 start at 1.6/1.8 Le/100 km (city/highway) for Standard Range cars. Long Range is rated for 1.7/1.9 Le/100 km, and the Performance package’s estimates are 2.0/2.2 Le/100 km.
Competition
Tesla is the only carmaker offering an all-electric upscale compact car right now, so the Model 3 technically has no direct competition. However, BMW and Volvo make plug-in versions of their 3 Series and S60 sedans, with the latter being the better match for the Tesla’s performance.
